It very lucidly unfolds in a thoroughly PRACTICE-ORIENTED and highly WORKMAN-LIKE manner all the “ins and outs” of what the CONCRETE Engineer in the FIELD is vexed about in order to be able to quickly KNOW the correct FACTS and PRACTICE for making CORRECT CONCRETE for CONSTRUCTION.
The books on CONCRETE TECHNOLOGY are numerous. They essentially purerly THEORISE in true tradition of class room PROFESSORIAL MONOLOGUES but are clueless when it comes to WORKMAN-LIKE PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE in the FIELD. (They can speak with great gusto for hours on the ultimate strength of a “nut” (and even find the existing performing structures “unsafe”!!), BUT are unable to squarely guide on the CORRECT PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE APPLICABLE IN THE FIELD - THE FIELD WHERE ALL THE “FUN-AND-RESPONSIBILITY” LIES, WHERE THE BURDEN OF HAVING TO TAKE LEGALLY AND CONTRACTUALLY BINDING SPLIT-SECOND DECISIONS CAN GIVE “ULCERS” AND EVEN “LAND ONE BEHIND THE BARS” IF CORRECT DECISIONS ARE DELAYED OR WRONGLY TAKEN. !!
This book belongs to an altogether different genre, in that it covers at least most of what the CONCRETE ENGINEER in the FIELD wants to know - ranging from “exactly when should curing of just laid concrete commence”, “correct acceptability criteria of concrete strength test results in the absence of the value of the standard deviation”, “how the value of the standard deviation of concrete strength effects the requisite minimum works strength through the works test results – for the target strength”, “how the strength of the test specimens (which must be kept fully immersed in a water-bath all the time all the way until they are tested in saturated surface dry condition) relates with the strength of concrete in the structure they represent (when that structure is barely cured for just 12 to 14 days – probably nights excluded – and that too deficiently, by the corner-cutting Contractor’s ill-experienced Foreman !!), “the exact sequence of charging (and percentages of the contents) of C.A., F.A., Cement, and Water, in to the automated drum-mixer in the Concrete Batching and Mixing Plant”, “the drum-speed (in rpm) during the ‘mixing’ and during the ‘transportation to the work-site Kms. away – i.e. the MIXING SPEED and the AGITATING SPEED”, “effect of delay in effective curing causing air-curing when it should have been water-curing for instance ….. which leads to lowering of concrete strength after 28 days’, etc., etc., etc.
In short, THIS BOOK IS A POCKET-SIZED ENCYCLOPEDIA FOR MAKING GOOD CONCRETE CORRECTLY!!!!
